Day Drives, Night Walks
2022
Day drives, night walks is a series of artworks inspired by my activities living within an urban landscape. Abstract oil paintings focus on colors studied from the field. Red-orange swatches of pigments are sourced from construction sites. Blue-purple streaks rubbings from the skins of store-bought berries. With pigments sourced from the land and synthetic paint tubes, the paintings explore color found in and around nature. Flat works on a thin vinyl material employ painting and photography to explore a mediated space between reality and my experience of it. The blurred deep-blue photographs paired with brushy paintings replicate a sense of vision that is always adjusting and re-focusing. Through framing and reframing, I move closer to identifying a contemporary ideology of landscape representations to define my personal relationship to the landscapes I encounter.
